John's Commentaries

|
March 6, 2002
I just popped over to the Vote2002 site to check the returns by county, expecting Orange County
to have been the runaway turnout champions based on what was on the table locally. What a
disappointment. Why was the turnout so low? I could see those of the liberal persuasion being
put off by the available options but what happened to the conservatives? Seems like, on a
percentage basis, the farm communities and liberal communities (by county) held much larger
sway, based on turn out percentages, than did the "conservative caucus."
Do we need to start emptying the nursing homes and running buses from Leisure World to increase
our numbers? Or perhaps Richard Nixon and company could make special appearances just on
election days. Of that whopping 36.6% it looks like almost two-thirds of Orange County's votes
were conservative, based on gubernatorial returns. Yet statewide, my good friend Mr. Davis
still cleaned our collective clocks. He is at least as disingenuous as Clinton, yet not nearly
as charming. If we can't muster enough votes to defeat such a pathetic challenge from the left
then maybe it is time to fold up shop and move to Mexico where most everyone is in agreement
about how much government involvement they want in their lives. (Answer: none)
And, as always, all of the bond issues were rubber-stamped by the electoral lemmings, who did
it "for the children." Maybe if previous generations had been more concerned with decent
education for "the children" then the economic ineptness of the present electorate would never
have come to be.
Sorry for electronically hyperventilating, but I am a little more than concerned for the sake of
my own family and "for the children" of this fair state who keep getting the carpet yanked out
from under them just to benefit the delicate social consciences of the liberal Baby Boomer
generation. Just let me breath into a paper bag for a few minutes and I'll be OK.
